One reason for the growing number of people with type 2 diabetes may be a widespread attitude about exercise. Researchers writing in a 2007 issue of Diabetes Care found that many Americans don't think it's abnormal to be inactive. Only 39 percent of adults with type 2 diabetes were active, compared with 58 percent of adults who didn't have the disease. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), regular exercise, a decrease in fat and calories, and weight loss can help reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
